‍Role-playing games, as we know them today, began with the release of the first three Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Booklets in 1974.  This early version of D&D was developed from Gary Gygax’s game Chainmail.  The history of D&D is pretty interesting and I would highly encourage anyone interested to spend some time reading about it.

‍Dr. Strange has a very early association with D&D. Some of the very first illustrations  created for the game, by Greg Bell, were inspired by a Dr. Strange story in Strange Tales 167 called “This Dream…This Doom”.  The rearing horse on the front of the booklet Volume 1 Men & Magic came from a panel on page 11 depicting a viking warrior rearing on horseback and an illustration in Volume 2 Monsters & Treasure is taken directly from page 5 of the story with Dr. Strange replaced by the silhouette of a wizard.

‍In 1984, TSR published the first Marvel Super Heroes role-playing game.  Over the next several years, they would release box sets, accessories, lead miniatures, adventures/modules and advanced rules for the game.  You could create your own super hero to play or use one of the known super heroes from the comic books.

‍Dr. Strange appears in many of these resources to include rule books, adventures and figures.

‍Dr. Strange has continued to appear in the latest version of the game called: Marvel Multiverse Role-playing Game that was first released in 2023 and has continued to released content into 2026.

‍The following terms and definitions apply:

‍Figure - any miniature figure used to play the game.

‍Rule Book - are the core reference material books.

‍Game Accessory - are comprised of booklets and other resources that expand on the information contained in the rule books.

‍Sets - are boxed editions of the game that come with rule books and other resources.

‍Adventures  - are modules and campaigns that provide guided adventures for the game.

‍Misc - is anything that is not included in the above categories..
